Northumberland is situated in the north east of England and is the country’s most northerly county. It is also one of the coldest and is the least densely populated county of England with around sixty two people per square kilometre. Overall Northumberland has a population of around 310,000.

Being situated on the North Sea coast and having a border with Scotland, the county has seen many invasions through history and as a result has a number of castles which now draw tourists year round. Indeed tourism is one of Northumberland’s main industries today, bringing in an estimated £165 million per annum from over a million visitors.

Northumberland is a very rugged yet beautiful county containing the Northumberland National Park and its coast is designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Lindisfarne, or Holy Island, is situated just off the coast and is linked to the mainland by a causeway that is flooded by the tide twice a day.
